Objectives
- Get basic knowledge on the following topics:
- base resources of computer systems:
- storage, computing power, bandwidth, software, resource virtualization
- base resources of computer systems:
- Get best practices in system administration of UNIX like systems
- Understand processes in system administration:
- planning, risk management, implementation, testing, maintenance, monitoring, documenting, service support, problem management
- Acquired practical skills include following keywords:
- unix fs, bash, Debian 8, debootstrap, mdadm, cryttpab, lvm2 fstab, fdisk, parted, partx, ext4, btrfs, apt, aptitude, kernel, initrd, xen, ifconfig, iptables, nmap, netstat, tcpdump, openssh, resolv.conf, nslookup, dig, dnsutils, bind9, postfix, exmi4, apache2, openssl, x509 certs, apache mods, nfs, samba4, swat, ldap, mediatomp, cms wordpress, amanda, icinga, darkstat ... and optionally more if you perform quick ;)

- Visiting assistants are determined to cover specific topics of the lab sessions (see lab schedule)
- Visiting assistants may volunteer to help the with regular assistants
- Regular assistants may delegate some labs (by agreement with visiting assistant)

- Access granted during the first week
Course grading
- Labs give 50% of the final grade
- Labs grading explained in lab environment tutorials
- All Lab tasks have to be completed 100% in order to be allowed to take the examination.
- Exam gives 50% of the final grade
- Exam rules are explained in the lab environment tutorials
- Course is graded positively if you collect at least 51% of total points
Lab environment
Remote server infrastructure. Each student is having his own virtual server to configure. Access over network, required software:
- VPN Client
- SSH Client
- Web browser
- Here we mentioned only the generic names, a particular implementation of those packages for specific OS if at students's choice ;)
Access is granted during the first week, preliminary UNIX skills are required. on lab schedule page
Class environment
Class 123 machines have no specific software apart from those mentioned in Lab Environment section.
- Personal laptops are allowed in the class, however you setup additional software packages (VPN client, SSH client) at your own considering an operation system of your laptop.
- Personal laptops allowed to use class wireless network but class cable network, detaching cables of class machines is forbidden.
