This course is primarily intended for Bachelor's level students and is recommended for Master's students with an interest in compression techniques for multimedia. Lossy compression techniques and their applications to image, video, speech and audio compression are studied. The course consists of six parts. In Parts 1 and 2 the basic aspects of source coding with fidelity criteria are introduced. In Parts 3, 4, and 5 commonly used coding techniques are discussed. Part 6 is devoted to modern standards for image, video, speech, and audio compression. The standards JBIG, JPEG, JPEG 2000, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H264 are described.
