Data Science Projects

The course objective is giving master and PhD students the chance to gain practical knowledge in the field of Data Science and Engineering. The students will learn how to independently carry out applied projects to solve specific issues related to

• data engineering, e.g., ingesting data, data wrangling, and design data pipelines;
• data science, e.g., advanced analytics, machine learning, and deep learning;
• data systems, e.g., optimization, system integration, porting.

The students are supposed to work within one of the research groups under the chair of Data Science.

Organization of the course

Volume: 3 ECTS

• Subject can be taken twice, in two different semesters
• 3 ECTS corresponds approximately to 78h of work

Occurrences: There are no regular lectures, seminars, or labs in this course.
Curricula: Computer Science MSc, Data Science MSc, Conversion Master in IT MSc.

This course is for you if the following conditions are met:

• You want to complete a concrete project with a duration of one semester.
• The project is related to data processing or data mining.
• There is a supervisor who is willing to mentor you.

Course Requirements

1. Find a topic and a supervisor and agree upon a project topic.
2. Prepare a project plan
   • The instructor must confirm he/she agrees to supervise the project
   • Send the plan to the course coordinator cc-ing your supervisor to enrol.
3. Complete the project during the semester
4. Give a talk in the supervisors' research group
5. Write the project report and submit through the course page to pass

Expectation

• We do not coach nor babysit you!
• Completing the project is the responsibility of the student.
• Your supervisor decides whether you pass or fail the course!
• You can pass even if the project fails provided that you have worked hard enough!
• If the student and the supervisor disagree on the final result, we will arrange an independent review of the results.
