Projects

Every year students think up a project idea, or choose an idea proposed by the course staff, implement it, and present it. Projects are usually done in groups of up to three people.

The project should show deeper engagement with an algorithmic topic. It can be original research on algorithms or data structures, a practical implementation of an algorithm, performance analysis and comparison of methods, a visualisation, or another clearly algorithmic project.

Good starting points are homework topics, lecture topics, your own research/work interests, or a practical problem where algorithmic choices matter. If you are not sure whether your idea fits the course, ask the staff early.

Project proposal

Your project proposal should include:

• title;
• 2-5 sentence short description;
• motivation and main challenge;
• algorithmic content: which algorithm, data structure, method, comparison, or analysis is central;
• division of tasks, estimated work hours per task, and internal deadlines;
• allocation of tasks and hours to the 2-3 team members;
• recommended: a Gantt chart covering tasks, people, hours, and deadlines;
• description of the expected results for the project report/poster.

The proposal is not meant to be long. It should be clear enough that the staff can give useful feedback early.

• Project preparation and feedback week: 02.11.
• Project proposal / progress checkpoint: 09.11.
• Final poster/report deadline: to be announced.
• Final project presentation / poster session: to be announced.

Poster and final presentation

Final project posters should be uploaded to the Courses submission form as PDFs. The final presentation or poster session date will be announced when rooms and course scheduling are confirmed.

Poster format:

• A0 size: 84.1 cm x 118.9 cm;
• portrait orientation;
• PDF file.

If posters are printed through Tartu Ülikooli kirjastus, use the keyword "Algoritmika" when sending the poster for printing. Printing details and deadlines will be confirmed before the poster deadline.
