Software Product Management II

The course builds upon the knowledge acquired in Software Product Management with focus on hands-on experience, and finding the right product vision and strategy. In addition, the course introduces go-to-market strategies for products. Topics covered are product marketing, market and competitive analysis, pricing and packaging, and traction.

Objective

Acquire the skills and frameworks for discovering new products and viable go-to-market strategies for software products. Upon a successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Discover and evaluate new products ideas
  • Define product vision and strategy
  • Explore different go-to-market strategies for a product

Structure and Assessment

The course consists 8 sessions covering the following topics:

  • Introduction
  • Jobs to be done
  • Market Research
  • Business Planning
  • Product Marketing
  • Traction
  • Pricing and Packaging

The course will be delivered to the students through the following channels.

  • Lectures – Each topic is introduced via lectures followed by hands-on practical sessions.
  • Practical Sessions – The theory provided during the lectures are applied on cases.
  • Online – The students are given access to course materials (texts and videos) via Moodle.
  • Homework – There will be homework and final presentation that are to be completed in groups of 2.

This course has 7 homework, each of which can give max 10 points (total 70 points). There is also a final presentation that can give max 30 points. For a passing grade, at least 51 points are required. The grading (A-F) follows the University of Tartu standard.

Communication

The main forum for communication (when not in lectures or sessions) is the online forum set up in Moodle. Course participants can ask questions about topics covered, assignments or anything else related to the course or the contents taught and discussed in the course. The main reason for using online community is to ensure that all students get access to responses and clarifications.
