Title: An introduction to differential privacy
Abstract:
Consider a trusted party that holds a database with sensitive information (e.g. medical data) and provides an interface for users to make statistical queries against that dataset. With a series of carefully constructed queries, a malicious user could easily learn individual values from the dataset, thus compromising the privacy of users whose sensitive information is contained in this dataset.
This talk will introduce the concept of differential privacy, which aims to preserve the privacy of individual records in the database, while still providing statistically useful answers to the queries. We will go through the main idea behind the differential privacy, its main properties and some of its applications.
