MAST3D - Mapping ASTeroids in 3D
Description
Geological mapping is usually a monotonous process, especially when it needs to be done manually. The process of mapping features within landscapes like outcrops or on other planetary bodies like craters and boulders can be made fun and interesting if the landscape to be mapped is visualized within virtual reality and the features can be mapped interactively.
This project aims to develop an environment within which researchers, students, and beginners, alike can interactively and immersively map the features on a target body (for example - asteroid or comet). Virtual reality offers the possibility to view the target body for different all-round angles to make more confident observations.
The user shall have the possibility to export the mapped features as a 2D and 3D cartographic, which can be used for educational purposes to promote the knowledge of Geological Mapping and Planetary Sciences.
Prototype
Milestone 1
Tasks completed:
- Drawing on a plane
- Scaling an object in the scene
Tasks planned for Milestone 2:
- Implementing the asteroid and having scaling and drawing on it
- Exporting the asteroid
Milestone 2
Tasks completed:
- Scaling the asteroid
- Drawing on the asteroid that has a texture
- Exporting the object
Explored the exporting options using Python in Unreal Engine and exporting using the blueprint method ExportGLTF. Succeeded in both.
Problems faced:
- When trying to implement the export into the project that has scaling and drawing, the UE crashed. Trying to see where is the problem
Tasks planned for Milestone 3:
- fix export
- environment map (HDRI)
- music and sounds
- widget for export
- clear paint from asteroid
