Homework 5: Process Mining
- To be completed individually or in pairs
- Submit a slide deck in PDF, Powerpoint, or LibreOffice, using the homework submission button. The last slide of the slide deck should contain a link to a video hosted in a platform of your choice (see instructions below).
We consider an event log of a loan origination process, which can be found here: https://owncloud.ut.ee/owncloud/s/w6adDY7i5PkPo3w
Tasks / Questions
Task 1 (1 point)
Identify the rework loop in this process. For each rework loop, indicate which activity is most likely to produce the defect that leads to this rework.
Task 2 (1 point)
Use different process map overlays to determine which activity from the previous question is likely to have the greatest effect on the cycle time of the process. Provide the reasoning why you picked that activity, and compare the cycle time of cases with and without that activity.
Task 3 (1 point)
This event log contains loans from multiple countries. Which of the activities identified in the first question are more common in Australia (AUS) and which are more common in New Zealand (NZL)?
Task 4 (1 point)
Discover an "as is" simulation scenario based on the above event log. When discovering the as-is simulation model, set the arcs slider to 100% and remember to include the simulation parameters when saving the BPMN model. Next, create a "what if" simulation model to answer the following question: If the number of cases per time unit doubles, how many additional resources (and of which role) would we need to allocate so that the case durations and the waiting times remain at a level similar to the as-is process.
Task 5 (1 point)
The manager of this process is considering changes to the activity "Amend Offer". These changes are estimated to result in rejecting 30% of the applications that require amendments immediately after the activity "Amend Offer". In other words, in 30% of cases, after the "Amend Offer" activity, the case will end. As a result of this change, the processing time of the activity "Amend Offer" will increase to approximately 1 hour on average with an exponential distribution. How would this change affect the overall performance of this process? Would this change improve or degrade the performance, and by how much?
Deliverable
You should present your findings in a video of between 5 and 15 minutes. For each question, you should provide a brief explanation and one or more supporting screenshots (or give a short demo of Apromore to show how you arrived at your answer)
You may record your video using any screencast software. Your voice should be clearly audible. You do not need to turn on your video camera in the video, but the slides and/or the process mining tool should be visible.
You may host your video using any cloud storage solution (Dropbox, Google drive, in the university's Owncloud platform), or in a video hosting platform (Vimeo, Youtube). The video should be openly accessible (but you can make it "unlisted" or not searchable). In case you do this homework in a team (of two people), the video presentation should be done by one of the team members (or both).
You may prepare your slides using any suitable software, be it PPT or using a specialized SaaS solution for preparing presentations such as Canva, Google Slides, or Prezi.
You should submit your slides in PDF or PPT format (Libreoffice format accepted). The last slide in the slide deck should contain the link to the video recording. The link should be public (i.e. if someone has the link and clicks on it, they should be able to watch your video presentation).
In addition to the correctness and completeness of your answers, the quality of your oral presentation will also be taken into account in the homework grade.
