Homework 1: Automated Process Discovery
This homework refers to the Claims Management event log, which has been shared in the course Message Board.
Based on this event log, answer the following questions.
- [1 point] Normally, a claim is first analyzed. After that, the claims handler makes an assessment of the claim to determine if the claim can move forward in the process. Is it always true that a claim is first analyzed and then assessed? Or are some claims assessed differently? If some claims are assessed differently, explain how they are assessed? Include a screenshot to support your answer.
- [1 point] Normally, a case of this process ends when the claim settlement is executed (i.e. when the activity "Execute Claims Settlement" occurs). Do all cases end in this way? Or do some cases end differently? If some cases end differently, explain the different ways in which a case can finish? Provide one or more screenshots to support your answer.
- [1 point] Normally, a claim is registered only once. Does it happen that a claim is registered more than once? If so, in how many cases a claim is registered more than once? Include a screenshot to support your answer.
- [1 point] A hand-off means that one worker (resource) finishes an activity in a case, and another worker (resource) executes the next activity in the same case. For example, a claims handler called Roger finishes an activity, and the next activity in the same case is performed by a claims officer called Alisa. A "ping-pong" behavior is a situation where there is a hand-off from a resource R1 to another resource R2, and right after, there is a hand-off from resource R2 to resource R1 in the same case. In other words, the case moves from R1 to R2 and then back to R1. Find two examples of ping-pong behavior in this process. Which resources are involved in this ping-pong? How many times the ping-pong occurs? Include one or two screenshots to support your answer.
- [1 point] Which claim required the largest number of steps (activity instances) to be settled? How much time it took to handle that claim from start to end? Note: a claim is “settled” if the activity “Execute claim settlement” was executed for that claim.
- [1 point] Normally, the assessment of a claim must be approved (activity "Approve assessment") just before the settlement is prepared ("Prepare claim settlement"). Is this guideline always followed? If not, find out in which cases it is not followed (give the case IDs). Provide a screenshot to support your answer.
Note: During grading it was decided that task 4 (resource back and forth) will be a bonus task.
